Physiologic Changes on the Aging Process
Speaker: John Bullock, M.S., Ph.D.

Aging refers to those NORMATIVE irreversible changes that occur in a living organism with the passage of time that result in the gradual loss of functional reserve. Gerontology is the study of these NORMAL physiologic, biochemical, morphological, sociological, psychological, economic changes that are consequences of the aging process. Geriatrics is a branch of clinical medicine that is concerned with the ABNORMAL (pathological) changes associated with the aging process . Aging is not to be equated with the disease processes that result from aging.

This presentation will focus on the medical characteristics of aging populations: (1) a decline in functional capacity (2) latency of disease (3) multiplicity of disease states (4) greater drug effect and (5) misleading signs and symptoms of physical disease.

Dinner Meeting

Joint Meeting Palisades Section SPE and ACC&CE
Title: Forensics – Then and Now
Speaker: Dr. Michael M. Blumenthal, Libra Technical Center, LLC

For more than 100 years, Sherlock Holmes and CSI have fascinated billions of people. The presentation and hiding of legally admissible evidence (Forensics and Antiforensics) have tested the systematic and logical thinking of otherwise successful crooks, sleuths, and experts. Can we ourselves in real life be like the protagonists of our fiction? What is the reality of working in a forensics lab, and why did Sherlock Holmes not even consider fingerprints? Let’s explore the frauds, the industrial cheats, and the just plain criminals counterfeiting our products!

Mike Blumenthal is a long-time member of ACC&CE and a multidisciplinary, award winning scientist. With Steve Duerr, Libra Technical Center performs forensics consulting work for the legal community, in addition to industrial projects that border on forensics. We are the new ISI’s (Industrial Science Investigators).

Dinner Meeting

“What is Wrong with Your Polymer?”
Speaker: Willis B. Hammond, Ph.D., President
W.B. Hammond Associates, LLC.

That question should strike fear into the heart of a conscientious salesperson and can set off a flurry of activity within a technical support group. A proper response should produce a satisfied customer and profits for the supplier. The challenge is to understand the problem and provide a real, cost effective solution that meets the customer’s needs. The speaker will illustrate his talk with real problems selected from 30 years of experience and solved using a broad range of analytical and spectroscopic instrumentation and techniques.
Willis Hammond grew up as a farm boy in Minnesota. He received his education from Northwestern University (BA, Chemistry, 1964) and Columbia (Ph. D, Physical Organic Chemistry, 1967). After teaching chemistry at Yale (1968-75), he worked at Allied Chemical (1975-96, polymer R&D), Hoechst Celanese (1997, polymer characterization), and the Ticona division of Celanese (1998-2006, polymer characterization and problem solving). In 2006, he formed W. B. Hammond Associate, LLC.
