Dinner Meeting

80th Anniversary Annual Membership Meeting at Ben’s Deli, New York
Speaker: Dr. John C. Bonacci, President, ACC&CE

The year passes quickly. We have maintained ourselves but we want quite a bit more for our group. For the coming year, I along with Richard Goodman and the rest of the officers and Board, want to be sure we have every meeting with a speaker. Even though many of our meetings have 10 to 15 attendees they are extremely worthwhile. We plan to schedule several joint meetings since they have been successful. Please try to join us.

The Newsletter continues to be our second most important activity after meetings and one could make a point that the Newsletter is of equal value since we have so many off-site members. Dr. Porcelli has done an excellent job and his addition of short columns and commentary items by members is providing some positive feedback. All of our members should take advantage of this tool. If you read an interesting article, write up your review, comments or criticisms and send it in under your byline. It can help you with clients. It helps future members as well as our current members understand us better.

At the Annual Meeting, I will expand some on these comments and entertain a Town Hall type format. We never know when an innovative idea pops out of our discussions. If you can make it to NYC, please mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 28th, at Ben’s Deli.

Dinner Meeting

Topic: “Cleantech – What is Clean and Where is the Business?”
Speaker: Faruq Marikar, Ph.D., NanoBiz LLC

Clean, green, sustainable – what does it mean? This talk will start with a quick look at the fuzzy, feel-good definitions of the various desirable futures; and then delve into the serious issue of where is the business in getting us from the “dirty” present to the clean future. Venture capital is financing spectacular photovoltaic start-up companies at impressive levels. The Midwest is awash in corn-based ethanol plants. Better light bulbs, electric vehicles, the hydrogen economy…where is it all headed, and who is making money?

Faruq Marikar is Managing Partner of Nanobiz, LLC a consulting group offering business, investment, patent and legal guidance on alternate energy, materials, cleantech and nanotechnology commercialization. Nanobiz helps major corporations in their growth initiatives and small companies in finding enabling partnerships and financing. In his prior corporate career with Hoechst, Celanese and Gould, Marikar was responsible for planning and developing new business opportunities. Product/industry areas of involvement include batteries, capacitors, fuel cells, films, paints, coatings, plating, corrosion, carbon fiber, graphite, specialty chemicals, plastics, electronic chemicals, ceramics, and composites.

After basic degrees in chemistry and a Ph.D. in engineering (Metallurgy/Materials Science) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Marikar was a post-doc at Imperial College, London and RPI in Troy, NY. He has 23 patents – in batteries, fuel cells, coatings and nanomaterials. Dr. Marikar served on an industrial advisory committee to the US National Science Foundation. He was the first chairman of the US Industrial Research Institute’s External Technology Directors’ Network.

Dinner Meeting

Joint Meeting with AIChE
Topic: “Snapshots of Consulting Projects”
Speakers: John Bonacci, Fibonacci Inc. and Richard Goodman, RMG Consulting LLC

Dr. Bonacci will describe several interesting case history summaries ranging from expert witness experiences to a project on Global Warming primarily from a technology application perspective. These experiences evolve from work for clients of his company Fibonacci, Inc. over a 20 year period but with recent emphasis. The case histories emanate from catalyst applications, air pollution control, safety & accidents and some design work.

Dr. Goodman will focus on the diversity of experiences one has as a consultant. Having worked for Kodak, Richard Goodman established his consultancy, RMGC LLC, based upon the needs of Kodak for an expert delegate representative to the ISO TC 130 Graphic technology Working Groups. He will describe what that has entailed. But he will also touch on the diversity of his other clients from very different business areas and how one can prepare himself for these other opportunities.

BIO— Dr. John C. Bonacci is a PhD Chemical Engineer with degrees from Clarkson University and U. of Pennsylvania. He has a P.E. and US Patent Agent license and is a Fellow Member of AICHE and this local chapter. He holds 101 global patents and has authored dozens of papers and presentations. He has been an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers and Stevens and is currently President of ACC&CE. His most recent publication is a paper in the Jan. 2007 issue of CEP.

Dr. Goodman is a PhD surface chemist with degrees from the Universities of Michigan and California. He has had a thirty-five year career with large companies, including the original American Cyanamid Company and the Kodak Polychrome Graphics JV owned by Kodak, with entrepreneurial enterprises, e.g. connected to the 1970’s energy crisis and running his own consulting businesses. He has 15 US patents and has been Chair of the New York Section of the ACS, President of the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts and is the current VP of ACC&CE.

Dinner Meeting

Topic: “Developing Effective Networks – Introduction to LinkedIn.com”
Speaker: Alan Johnson

From a business perspective, networking is “connecting with people to conduct business.” Having an effective network means having access to everyone you need for conducting business. Unfortunately, networking is difficult. It takes work and time and it’s easy to put off. And it doesn’t come naturally to most people. Having and implementing a networking strategy is key to developing an effective network. Components can include professional organizations such as ACC&CE, topic oriented organizations, and in the virtual world, on-line networking. Alan Johnson will discuss the fundamentals of developing an effective networking strategy and will demonstrate the use of LinkedIn, a global network of over 12 million professionals. You won’t want to miss this provocative discussion- it could make a big difference in how you approach the process of building new professional relationships.

Biography: Alan’s background includes 30 years of experience in the oil, chemical and allied industries. He worked for Eastman Kodak, Marathon Oil, American Cyanamid, BASF and, most recently, Infineum USA (a joint venture of ExxonMobil and Shell). Throughout his career Alan has held positions of increasing responsibility, including technical service, sales, product management, business management, and new business development.
Alan is an avid user of LinkedIn.com and uses it daily in his business pursuits. Using the power of LinkedIn, he has managed to leverage 250 direct contacts into 175,000 secondary contacts, and over 4 million tertiary contacts. His goal is to double these numbers in 2008.
Alan earned a B.S. ChE from Purdue University. He is a member of AIChE and serves on the executive committee of the Northern New Jersey section. He is also a member of CDMA and is the Chair of the Membership Committee.

Please join us for dinner. Advanced reservations recommended.
