Peter has a proven track-record of successful and award-winning product development and project implementation providing significant cost savings, increased operational efficiencies, and enhanced competitive position. He received his BSChE from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and has an MBA – Technology Management from The University of Phoenix. Peter is a licensed P.E. in New Jersey, and is also a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
Abstract:
October 23, 2019 marked the 30th anniversary of a devastating fire and explosion that killed 23 workers, and injured over 300 more, at a major chemical plant in Pasadena, TX. The explosion, which occurred at the Phillips 66 Houston Chemical Complex (HCC) on the Houston Ship Channel, helped modernize process safety management (PSM) programs in the United States. This significant incident removed any doubt that a catastrophic industrial process release could produce severe consequences in a geographic region with a mature regulatory framework. We will review what happened, why it happened, and the lessons learned.

Speaker:
David Morse
Biography:
Dave has spent 38 years in the specialty chemicals industry in pilot plants and production since graduating from Bucknell University with a BSChE. It was while working in the Sandoz/Clariant pilot plant that he was tapped to research and develop the process which is the topic of tonight’s talk. Dave has leveraged his interest in chemistry to enhance his career as an industrial chemical engineer with specialty chemical producers Henkel/Cognis & Sandoz/Clariant then to printing ink developer Markem-Imaje. He has been consulting in specialty chemicals for the past year.
Abstract:
This talk will cover the chemical research via batch extraction & calorimetry, the piloting on an extraction column, economics of the proposed production solution, and the building/installation of the production column where there is chemical reaction occurring at the same time as phase transfer. The process stream to be treated is spent sulfuric acid from a dinitration reaction. We will look at the reaction kinetics, liquid/liquid distribution equilibrium data development, and piloting parameters that were empirically determined.
